A strong website strategy can form the foundation for future marketing campaigns.
I was recently asked in a job interview how I would build a website from scratch. Here is my approach.
1. Define Purpose, Audience, and Goals:
- Define the purpose of the website.
- Conduct research to understand your target audience.
- Set clear goals and objectives for the site.
- Create a basic wireframe to visualize the site’s layout.
2. Register Domain and Hosting:
- Register the domain name through a reliable domain registrar like Google Domains, GoDaddy, or BlueHost.
- Consider domain options with good customer support.
- Choose a hosting provider that offers reliable hosting and includes free SSL certificates.
- Google Workspace for hosting utilities or Proton email for security-specific cases.
3. Modular Coding Approach:
- A modular coding approach allows for a systematic development process.
- Start with the initial wireframe to create a Minimum Viable Product (MVP).
- Ensure functionality and mobile accessibility at each development stage.
4. HTML Structure:
- Begin by creating the structural foundation using HTML.
- Define the layout and content structure of the website.
5. CSS Styling:
- Develop separate CSS files for styling.
- Define colors, fonts, and layouts that align with the brand story.
6. JavaScript for Interactivity:
- Optionally, incorporate JavaScript libraries for interactivity and enhanced user experience.
- Be mindful of page load times and conduct testing to avoid user frustration.
7. Tagging and Documentation:
- Properly tag and document the code base and files.
- Keep code organized and manageable for future updates and maintenance.
8. Mobile-First Development:
- Focus on a mobile-first development approach to ensure responsiveness.
- Test the website on various browsers and devices to guarantee a consistent user experience.
This is the abbreviated description of the process. I will be developing a more in-depth version into slides for a proposal like this one. But this is not all one needs for a successful website. A strong website strategy can form the foundation for future marketing campaigns with the following additional considerations
9. Content Strategy:
- Develop a content strategy that includes planning and organizing the content you’ll publish on the website. This should involve creating a content calendar, deciding on the type of content (e.g., blog posts, videos, images), and ensuring that the content aligns with your defined goals and audience preferences.
10. SEO Optimization:
- Implement on-page SEO techniques to improve the website’s visibility in search engine results. This includes optimizing meta tags (title, description), using header tags effectively, and incorporating relevant keywords into your content.
11. User Experience (UX) Design:
- Pay close attention to the user experience design, including navigation, layout, and overall usability. Ensure that the website is intuitive to navigate, loads quickly, and provides a pleasant user experience across different devices.
12. Security Measures:
- Implement security measures to protect the website and user data. This may include regular software updates, strong password policies, and security plugins or tools to safeguard against common threats.
13. Testing and Quality Assurance:
- Thoroughly test the website’s functionality and appearance across various browsers, devices, and screen sizes. Check for any broken links, missing images, or formatting issues. Conduct user testing to gather feedback and make necessary improvements.
14. Performance Optimization:
- Optimize the website’s performance by reducing page load times. Compress images, leverage browser caching, and minimize HTTP requests to ensure fast loading speeds.
15. Analytics Integration:
- Integrate web analytics tools like Google Analytics to track and analyze user behavior on the website. This data will provide valuable insights for making data-driven decisions and refining your site’s performance.
16. Backup and Recovery:
- Set up regular automated backups to ensure that you can restore the website to a previous state in case of data loss or technical issues. Having a backup and recovery plan is essential for website security.
17. Legal and Compliance:
- Ensure that your website complies with legal requirements, such as General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) for data protection and accessibility standards like Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) for users with disabilities. Include a privacy policy and terms of service if applicable.
18. Launch and Promotion:
- Once the website is ready, plan a successful launch strategy. Promote the website through various channels, such as social media, email marketing, and SEO optimization, to attract your target audience.
By incorporating these additional steps into your website development process, you can create a more comprehensive and effective website that not only looks great but also serves your audience’s needs, complies with important standards and regulations, and complements robust multi-channel campaigns.
